Life Insurance FAQ

Term Life vs. Whole Life: Which Is Right for Me?

The short answer: Term life is affordable protection for temporary needs — your working years, the mortgage, raising kids — while whole life is permanent coverage with a cash-value component that typically costs 10 to 15 times more for the same death benefit. Most young families need term; whole life fits lifelong needs like estate planning or providing for a lifelong dependent.

Side-by-side comparison

The cost gap, in real numbers

This is the single biggest difference. Based on 2026 market estimates for a $500,000 policy for a healthy 35-year-old non-smoker:

That's a 10- to 15-times difference for the identical death benefit. The gap exists for two reasons: the insurer knows it will eventually pay every whole life claim (only about 1–2% of term policies ever pay out), and part of every whole life premium funds the cash value.

"Buy term and invest the difference" — a fair look

You've probably heard this one. The math: take the roughly $400+/month gap between whole life and term premiums and invest it for 30 years. At reasonable market returns, the investment account can grow larger than the whole life policy's cash value.

That's often true — if you actually invest the difference consistently for decades and leave it alone. Many people don't, which is where whole life's forced-savings structure has real behavioral value. Whole life also offers guarantees and tax treatment that a brokerage account doesn't. Neither choice is "throwing money away": term buys pure protection at the lowest price; whole life buys permanence plus a savings component at a premium price. The right answer depends on your discipline, your tax situation, and whether your need is temporary or lifelong.

One more option: convertible term

Many term policies include a conversion option, letting you convert some or all of your term coverage to permanent insurance later — usually without a new medical exam. It's a useful middle path: buy affordable term now, keep the door open to permanent coverage if your needs change.
