Most insurance agents have only ever sold insurance. Before I sold my first policy, I priced the risk, paid the claims, and decided the approvals.
When you're choosing someone to help protect your family, the obvious questions are about price and products. But there's a better question most people never ask: what has this person actually done in the industry? An agent who has only ever sold policies sees the business from one angle. Someone who has worked every side of it sees the whole picture — and that changes the advice you get.
My career spans more than 35 years across four roles: actuary, claims adjuster, underwriter, and now independent broker. Here's what each one taught me, and why it matters to the families I serve.
Actuaries are the mathematicians behind insurance pricing. I learned exactly how age, health, term length, and coverage amount translate into premiums — and, just as importantly, where the pricing has room to move. When I look at quotes for a family, I'm not just comparing numbers on a page. I understand why one carrier prices a profile better than another, which means I can shop your situation strategically instead of just sorting by price.
Nothing teaches you what insurance is for like sitting across from a grieving family. As an adjuster, I saw what happened when families had the right coverage — the mortgage kept getting paid, the kids stayed in their schools, life held together — and I saw what happened when they didn't. That experience is why I take coverage amounts seriously and why I'll tell you honestly when your number is too low. I've seen the difference a policy makes at the worst moment of someone's life.
Underwriters are the people who say yes or no. I know how applications are evaluated, what underwriters look for, and how a health history should be presented — in full honesty, but with proper context. That's why I take on the tough cases other agents turn away: complicated health histories, prior declines, situations that need a knowledgeable advocate. One carrier's "no" is often another carrier's approval, and knowing how to navigate that is a skill you only learn from the inside.
As an independent broker, I don't work for any single insurance company. I shop your profile across 40+ A-rated carriers to find the right fit — and here's what most people don't know: working with a broker costs you nothing extra. Brokers are paid by the carriers, so you don't pay more than buying direct. What you get in return is someone who advocates for you during underwriting and picks up the phone at claim time.
What this means for you, practically
- Smarter shopping. I know which carriers tend to price which profiles well, so your quotes come from the right places — not just the familiar names.
- Honest sizing. My claims background means I won't undersell your family's need to make a price look comfortable. The number should reflect your real life.
- A real advocate. If your application hits a snag, you're not alone with a call center. You have someone who has sat in the underwriter's chair making the case for you.
- Someone at claim time. When a family files a claim, they're grieving — not reading policy language. I help beneficiaries navigate the process personally, start to finish.
Licensed and accountable: I'm personally licensed in 10 states — MD, DC, VA, NC, OH, MI, TX, CA, SC, and FL — and serve families in all 50 states through partner agencies. National Producer #8444270. When you work with me, you're working with someone answerable to real state insurance regulators.
